SYMPOSIUM:
REMAPPING THE REGION

Since the founding of the state of Israel and the concomitant streams
of refugees and migration, a region that has always been highly sensitive
from the perspective of religious history has revealed
itself now to be a permanent hotbed of crises, constantly producing new
inclusions and exclusions. The sovereign state of Israel, which appears
as a uniformly operating military power - despite all the
tensions in domestic affairs and the heterogeneous immigrant positions
from Europe, Russia, the Arab region and, not least of all, the Palestinian
Israelis - is clearly distinct from the status of the Palestinians in
their struggle for autonomy and state recognition.
The two days of the
symposium, however, with Israeli, Palestinian and other international
participants, will not only deal with the current constellation, (identity-)
political shifts and their historical
contextualization, but also with their links to the sphere of culture.
Particularly in a place such as Linz, which was once home to the Hermann
Göring Works, positions appear relevant that work on the
theoretical deconstruction of the identification of the (male) subject
and nation, or which are devoted to a diasporic and translocal understanding
of culture, but without losing sight of the background of real conditions
of power and oppression. In addition, the issue of "Remapping the
Region" is inseparably tied to the mediatization of the Israel/Palestine
conflict, to the front lines in the battle for its representation in visual
culture. One of the central questions of the symposium is how to find
- without decreed "illusionary solutions" from outside, which
are thus already doomed to failure - practicable
and just forms of coexistence and dialogue.
