Kunst is located at the border between the museum and public space. Two
conspicuous banners in the signal colors of red and yellow mark the facade
of the O.K. FREE KUNST. Their purpose is to occupy a place where,
behind the graphite-gray opaque facade, art is "at home".
The message is addressed to the general public, to people who do not necessarily
visit the museum. On the one hand, it is a call for action, on the other
a cheap attempt to attract attention and also an observation on the status
of contemporary art in society.
Although Candice Breitz alludes to the medium of the billboard, FREE
KUNST is only contingently comparable with artistic billboard actions
in public space. It refers directly to the status of the O.K and attains
an additional significance within the exhibition project Open House.
Candice Breitz, born in 1972 in Johannesburg, was presented at the O.K
in 2001 with the exhibition CUTTINGS.
